Definition: Developmental delay is when a child does not meet his or her developmental milestones at the expected age. The delay can occur in one or many areas of developmental (e.g., gross or fine motor, language, social, or thinking skills). Developmental delay can have many different causes, such as genetic causes or complications of pregnancy and birth. Sometimes the cause is not known.
