Definition: Each gene in our DNA has two copies, one inherited from each parent. When a gene inherited from the mother has a different sequence of DNA bases than the gene inherited from the father, it is called an allele. When the allele inherited from one parent is different at two separate genes of interest from the allele inherited from the other parent, the person is considered a double heterozygote.
