Definition: A disorder that makes it difficult to swallow saliva, food, and liquids. It is caused by muscle weakness or loss of nervous system function affecting the tongue, cheeks, or esophagus (the tube connecting the throat to the stomach). Dysphagia can result from a stroke, brain injury, or degenerative disease (such as Parkinson disease). Treatment options include diet, occupational therapy, medication, and surgery.
