Definition: A gene deletion occurs when a specific portion of DNA that codes for a protein is missing from human cells. A gene deletion can be inherited if it first occurred in the gametes of one of the parents. A gene deletion can also occur for the first time in a family (de novo) if it is due to a change in the body cells (somatic cells) of an organism very soon after fertilization occurs.
