Definition: Genetic tests are used to make sure a person’s functional units of DNA (genes) are working properly. These tests are performed on a sample of blood, saliva, or other genetic material to determine if the sequence of nucleotides would be expected to code for working proteins. Genetic tests can examine chromosomes, only one specific gene, or they can examine many genes all at the same time.
