Definition: A condition in which the blood does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, which contains iron and carries oxygen. The condition can be caused by blood loss, the production of too few red blood cells, or the destruction of too many red blood cells. It may be treated with iron supplements or a change in diet.
