Definition: Hypogonadism occurs when the sex organs or gonads (testes in men and ovaries in women) do not function properly, resulting in little or no hormone production. Hypogonadism may be caused by autoimmune diseases, genetic diseases, infections, or trauma. The condition can affect secondary sex characteristics such as breast development in women and beard growth in men.
