Definition: Jaundice occurs when the skin and eyes take on a yellow color due to liver dysfunction or failure. The yellowing occurs because bilirubin, a component of the hemoglobin in blood, is not broken down properly by the liver. Jaundice is very common in the first few weeks of life, but can also happen later in life due to infections, liver failure, or certain genetic conditions.
