Definition: Meningitis refers to the swelling of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord called the meninges. The most common cause of meningitis is an infection, although injury can also cause meningitis to develop. Vaccines can prevent some forms of the condition. Symptoms of meningitis might include headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
