Definition: An obligate carrier is a person in a family who we know must carry a mutation because there are affected people in the family who could only have received a mutation from that person. For example, we assume that if two siblings have an autosomal recessive condition (a condition caused by having two mutated copies of a gene), then the siblings inherited one mutated gene from each parent. Therefore, both parents are obligate carriers.
