Definition: A reciprocal translocation is an exchange of genetic information between chromosomes. When portions of two chromosomes switch places with each other and no genetic information is lost, health problems do not typically result. However, if the break in the chromosome occurs in the middle of a gene, it can cause a genetic condition.
