Definition: The mechanism in a given species by which sex is determined; in many species sex is determined at fertilization by the nature of the sperm that fertilizes the egg. For instance, in humans, when a sperm carrying a Y chromosome fertilizes an egg, they create a male offspring, whereas when a sperm carrying an X chromosome fertilizes an egg, they normally produce a female offspring.
