Definition: Chemical bases are the building blocks of DNA. The four bases are adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). The bases pair up with each other (A–T and C–G) and are attached to a sugar molecule and a phosphate molecule, forming a structure called a nucleotide. This string of paired nucleotides forms a ladder-like structure of DNA called a double helix.
