Definition: A prenatal test used to determine whether a growing fetus has genetic disorders. A tube or needle is inserted through the vagina and cervix or through the belly to obtain a sample of the placental tissue (chorionic villus). This test is usually done early in the pregnancy, between weeks 10 and 12.
