Shukusei!! Loli Kami Requiem

"Shukusei!! Loli Kami Requiem" (Japanese: 粛聖!! ロリ神レクイエム☆, Hepburn:Shukusei!! Rori Kami Rekuiemu, lit.'Divine Purge! Requiem of the Loli God')[lower-alpha 1] is a song by Japanese artist Ui Shigure from her album The Rain Doesn't Stop Yet. Featuring vocals from Shigure as a nine-year-old and narration by Inuyama Tamaki, it was composed by D.watt and written by Maron, both of IOSYS. Though it was released in 2022, the song suddenly went viral in September 2023 after the release of its full music video.

Composition

The lyrics to "Shukusei!! Loli Kami Requiem" are written from the perspective of Ui Shigure's fictional nine-year-old persona assailing imprisoned lolicons while simultaneously acting as a goddess who leads them to salvation.[1] In the refrain, she threatens those who attempt to sexually touch her with imprisonment and taunts them in a roll call. The music video depicts danmaku 'barrage' comments, inspired by the comment layout of video-sharing platform Nico Nico Douga, representing the sexual predators.[2] In an act of "divine purg[ing]", the music cuts to her firing her "Ui Beam" to electrocute sludge creatures.[3] Her sadistic[4] way of taunting has been described as a "'mesugaki' trope"; that is, provocative behavior by young girls to sexually entice adults.[3]

Kitagawa (2023) of Kai-you divides the song into two main halves. The former is described as being upbeat or rising action with pop-music aspects to it, which then changes into dubstep with amplified basslines.[5]

Production and release

The song features vocals from Japanese illustrator and virtual YouTuber Ui Shigure's nine-year-old persona, dubbed "Loli Ui", who is featured occasionally in her livestreams.[6] The lyrics and composition of the song were written by doujin music group IOSYS' Maron and D.watt, respectively.[7] Narration is done by fellow VTuber Inuyama Tamaki.[8] The working title was "Shukusei: Butaba Communication!!" (粛聖☆ブタバコミュニケーション!!), according to Maron.[4] In a 2022 interview with Febri, Shigure said that, as an otaku herself, she quickly decided on a denpa 'nonsense' song when collaborating with IOSYS.[9] Additionally, she said that the lyrics she had received were going to be far more brutal compared to the final revision, calling it seemingly "as painful as hitting someone with concrete".[10]

The song was previewed on May 21, 2022, in one of Shigure's livestreams on YouTube.[11] It was included in her album The Rain Doesn't Stop Yet, which was released on May 25.[12] The music video for the song was released on September 10, 2023, on her YouTube channel.[13] Illustrations are credited to Shigure herself and animator Gagame, while the movie production is credited to Warabe Hōzuki.[14]

Reception

Upon its release, the song did not receive immediate notability and was supposedly overshadowed by the album's opening track.[15] However, after the release of its music video a year later, the song unexpectedly[16] went viral worldwide on social media and became an Internet meme. The video reached 10 million views in about 17 or 18 days, making it the fastest song to reach the milestone[17] and one of the fastest-growing original songs among VTubers in general.[18] It hit number one on the domestic Viral charts of Spotify on September 18.[18]

The high animation quality of Shigure's choreography helped amplify the growth in popularity.[19] Users on TikTok began posting videos of themselves or of computer-rendered model characters of their own or from video games—for example, loli characters of Genshin Impact—imitating the twirling dance moves featured in the chorus of the music video.[3] The platform accumulated over six thousand videos posted by the end of September.[20] Its popularity then spread to other platforms like YouTube Shorts and Twitter.[21]

Kitagawa (2023) noted its unique trend as a conjunction between music video and song.[22] Writing for The Magazine of TuneCore Japan, Masahiro Saitou notes that, while popular among the youth, the music is also reminiscent of Japanese Internet culture during the times of Nico Nico Douga being the primary video outlet in Japan.[2]

The popularity has since spawned concern over Shigure Ui's mind, as she, while welcoming the popularity on one hand, never intended for the song to go viral and was at a loss as to how to respond, since the song was more intended to be laced with in-jokes for her community only as opposed to the general public.[23][24] The work has since further solidified "Loli Ui" as small part of her V-tuber brand.

The song has amassed controversy due to its perceived subject of pedophilia. The child safety alarm maker Artec came under fire on social media after it pointed out the alarm featured in the music video was based on one of their products on their official Twitter account and proceeded to upload a video onto their official Youtube and TikTok channels featuring one of their employees dancing to the song and prostrating in gratitude for featuring their product on September 29. The company posted an apology on their website on October 2 for their "extremely inappropriate behaviour that lacks consideration and self-awareness", then deleted their TikTok account.[25][26] On October 3, Daisuke Yokoyama, the former actor for the children's television program Okaasan to Issho, deleted a video on TikTok of him performing the dance, after it had faced criticism on social media.[27] Yokoyama apologized for it, saying he was unaware of the context behind the song in addition to it being trendy, and also deleted his account.[28][29]

Notes

  1. Shukusei means "to purge" and is spelled ordinarily as 粛清; however, its use in the title is a Japanese word play, replacing the second kanji with 聖 sei ("holy" or "divine").
