2023 Al-Asad air base attack
On 18 October 2023, amid the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, Iraqi militants launched a drone attack on Al-Asad Airbase, a United States base in northern Iraq.[6][7] The attack was intercepted.[8] This occurred one day after the al-Ahli Arab Hospital explosion, which had spurred protests across the region.
The next day, a false alarm in the airbase caused the death of a civilian contractor from cardiac arrest.[9] On 20 October, the US ordered all non-emergency staff to leave their embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Erbil.[10]
