The champions for the 2023 season will be decided in the final four matchweeks (from matchweek 31 to 34) of the season between Vissel Kobe, Yokohama F. Marinos and Urawa Red Diamonds.[1]
Overview
For the first time since 2021 season, the number of the clubs in the league increased from 18 to 20. At the end of season, three clubs will be relegated to the J2 League in 2025 season, although without relegation play-offs between J1 and J2 clubs.[2]
Changes from the previous season
Only one club will be relegated to 2024 J2 League. Due to the league permanently expanding into 20 clubs format, the relegated club will be replaced by three teams promoted from the 2023 J2 League. One of those clubs were FC Machida Zelvia, who promoted to J1 for the first time in history after a seven-year run in J2. Another automatic promotion ticket will be decided between two Shizuoka clubs, Shimizu S-Pulse and Júbilo Iwata as well as Tokyo Verdy. Then, one last spot for the promotion will be contested in the play-offs between the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place teams, respectively.
