Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company is a Saudi Arabiabased joint stock company, currently operating in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. It is the subsidiary of Sheikh Saleh Ali Al Othaim Organization, which was founded in 1956. Its main activities are food wholesaling, grocery stores, and malls.[6]

With a presence in over 100 regions and cities, the company has achieved a vast geographical spread throughout the Kingdom. It has a high number of branches, with more than 323 branches inside the Kingdom till 2023, in addition to its spread outside the Kingdom, with 46 branches in the Arab Republic of Egypt.[7][8][9]

Forbes ranked the company third in the Arab World for retail executive management in 2016.[10] It also ranked the company in the top 100 companies in Saudi Arabia, and the top 200 companies in the Arab World.[11] In 2020, Forbes Middle-East listed the company was one of the 100 largest public companies in the Middle-East.[12]

History

1956 to 1980

In 1956 Al-Othaim Trading was established in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia by Sheikh Saleh Ali Al-Othaim. The foundation of Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company in 1980, which expanded commercial activities by building branches to sell wholesale and retail commodities.[13][14]

From 1981 to 2000

In 1990, Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company opened Store No. 14 and implemented the "Consumer Protection" method, making it one of the top markets in this industry. In 1992, The company's central warehouses with its quality requirements in dry and refrigerated storage were opened. The foundation of Al-Othaim Academy for Training and Development in the year 2000, with a total of 95,000 trainees to date.[15]

From 2001 to 2010

The "Iktissab" loyalty system was launched in 2004, and it is now one of the major loyalty networks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2007, the initiative of leaving halal donation from customers during store transactions to help official charities was launched.[16]

By 2008, Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets had completed the transformation from a private company to a publicly listed company in Saudi Stock Exchange “Tadawul”.[17][18]

From 2011 to 2023

In 2016, the first Othaim Markets outlets opened in Egypt where the Othaim Markets management decided to establish commercial chains to sell foodstuffs. With an initial amount of 144 million riyals, the first 15 branches were opened in 2016, as part of the expansion plan to establish chains under the name “Al-Othaim” in the Egyptian market. The launch of shop No. 300 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2022.[19][20]

Through the implementation of numerous programmes that are an intrinsic component of the company's policy and approach, Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company is responsible for social responsibility and community service programmes. The most well-known of these programmes are:

Residual halal donation program

The number of associations benefiting from this project has surpassed 15 in the Kingdom, and total donations have exceeded (10) million riyals since the program's inception.[26]

Magnetic cards initiative and Charitable Purchases

Dedicated to specific groups in society, disbursed through charities, and over 100,000 families benefited from them through more than 60 charitable societies in the Kingdom, as financial support provided by Al-Othaim Markets in this programme totaled more than 148 million riyals until the end of the first quarter of the current year 2023. Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company contributed more than 36 million riyals to the purchase of charity associations in the Kingdom of Sanabel Al-Khair cards until the conclusion of the first quarter of the current year 2023.[27]

Charitable associations and institutions agreement

Several agreements were negotiated to support the programmes of a variety of philanthropic organisations and institutions in the Kingdom, including the Voice Down Syndrome Association and others.[28]

Iktissab program

The Iktissab programme is the first integrated programme sponsored by Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company, Al-Othaim Charitable Foundation, and Iktissab Company, which is linked with Abdullah Al-Othaim Markets Company. The program's concept is centred on giving consumer and food commodities to the ultimate consumer who belongs to one of society's target groups at a reasonable and subsidised price. Customers who shop receive direct subsidies on a variety of essential and basic items, with a monthly maximum subsidy limit of 200 riyals per recipient. Until the end of the first quarter of the current year 2023G, total assistance amounted to more than 41 million riyals.[29]
