Ahad Raza Mir

Ahad Raza Mir (Urdu: احد رضا میر; born 29 September 1993) is a Canadian-Pakistani actor who primarily appears in Urdu-language television.[2] Mir has established himself as one of the leading television actor. He is a recipient of several accolades including three Hum Awards and one Lux Style Award.[3][4]

Mir began his acting career with a minor role in Khamoshiyan (2020). Mir went onto act in several theatre plays before returning to television with Sammi (2017). In the same year, he earned recognition with his portrayal of a doctor in Yaqeen Ka Safar, which won him Hum Award for Best Actor Popular and Lux Style Award for Best TV Actor. Mir received further praises for portraying an army officer in Ehd-e-Wafa (2019-2020) and a college topper in Hum Tum (2022). The former earned him a nomination for Lux Style Award for Best TV Actor - Critics Choice. Mir made his web debut with Dhoop Ki Deewar (2021) and appeared in the American series Resident Evil (2022).[5]

Early life and family

Mir was born on 29 September 1993[6] in Karachi, Sindh. He is the son of veteran actor and producer Asif Raza Mir and Samra Raza Mir, who is a musician, part of Pakistan's first female band, Symphony, formed in 1993.[7][8] His younger brother, Adnan Raza Mir, made his acting debut with Fairy Tale on Hum TV.[9]

Mir's paternal grandfather, Raza Mir, was a filmmaker, who also served as the cinematographer for the first ever Pakistani film, Teri Yaad (1948).[10] Singer-turned-actor Haroon Shahid is his cousin.[11]

Career

Career beginnings and stage roles (1993–2016)

Mir attended a Performing Arts High School, and graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.[12][13][14]

Mir started his career in 2010 at age 17, playing a brief role as the son of Sania Saeed and Faisal Rehman in the Hum TV's romantic drama Khamosiyan.[15] Mir started his career on stage, performing, directing and writing in several musicals and plays across Canada. Mir wanted to move to Toronto, but instead decided to go back to Pakistan to work in films and television.[16]

Yaqeen Ka Safar and rise to prominence (2017–2021)

In 2017, Mir made his comeback to television and played Salaar in Sammi opposite Mawra Hocane.[17] Mir was then cast in Yaqeen Ka Safar, where he played Dr. Asfand Yaar, opposite Sajal Aly, which marked a turning point in his career.[18] Mir was praised for his portrayal and it was one of the highest rated serials in Pakistani television.[19] His performance earned him Lux Style Award for Best TV Actor, and won three Hum Awards including the Hum Award for Best Actor.[20][21]

In 2018 Mir made his Coke Studio debut as a featured artist in its eleventh-season, where he performed the song "Ko Ko Korina" with Momina Mustehsan. Within a few days of the video being released on YouTube, it became the most-disliked video in the music show's history.[22][23][24] That same year, Mir made his film debut with Parwaaz Hai Junoon, opposite Hania Aamir, which became the seventh-highest-grossing Pakistani film of all time.[25][26] Mir then reunited with Sajal Aly and Mawra Hocane for Aangan where he played a poet, Jameel.[27][28]

The Shakespeare Company, with Vertigo Theatre in Canada, signed Mir to play Hamlet in their production in 2019, becoming one of the first South Asian actor to play the role professionally in Canada.[29] His performance won him the Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Drama.[30][4][31][32][33][34] In the same year, Mir played an army officer Saad Faraz in Ehd-e-Wafa opposite Alizeh Shah, which earned him critical praises.[35][36] Mir then played Amaanullah Khan opposite Sajal Ali in Yeh Dil Mera. For both these performance, he received Lux Style Award for Best TV Actor and Best TV Actor - Critics nominations.[37][38]

Mir made his web debut opposite Sajal Ali in Dhoop Ki Deewar as Vishal Malhotra. The series was released on ZEE5.[39]

Further success and recent work (2022-present)

Mir played a college chemistry student Adam Sultan in the Ramadan special Hum Tum opposite Ramsha Khan.[40] The series and his portrayal was praised across Pakistan and India.[41][42][43] The same year, he made his American television debut with the series Resident Evil, as Arjun Batra.[44]

Mir will next appear in British series World on Fire, as Rajib Pal.[45] Mir became an executive producer for the upcoming movie Kalasha, revolving around the culture of the Kalash people of the Chitral Valley.[46] Mir will also be part of Netflix first Pakistan original Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo.[47]

Personal life

On 6 June 2019, Mir got engaged to actress Sajal Aly, and married her in a private intimate ceremony on 14 March 2020 in Abu Dhabi.[48][49] Mir and Aly, later separated and eventually got divorced in March 2022.[50]

Other work and media image

Mir has been described in the media, among Pakistan's most popular actors. The News termed him a "charming addition" to the list of new-age Pakistani artists and added, "He is one (unlike many others) who is successfully standing on his own steam as opposed to leveraging his father’s popularity."[5][3] Mir comes from an influential filmmaking family and is often accused for being a beneficiary of nepotism. Mir stated in an interview, that he wanted “people to take [him], as an actor, very seriously and that he is “here to give Pakistan some good cinema and TV”.[51][52]

Mir became the eighth most searched person on Google in Pakistan in 2017.[53] For Aangan, Images Dawn named Mir in their "Standout performances: Male" list of 2019.[54] Mir has been placed in the 2022 Hello Pakistan's HOT100 list, in the "Trailblazers" category.[55] The actor serves as an ambassador for a number of brands such as Nestlé, Mountain Dew, Xiaomi, Coca-Cola and Lays, among others.[56] In 2021, he was appointed the brand ambassador of the Pakistan Pavilion, at the Expo 2020 Dubai.[57]
