In 1996 he became member of SPD. From 2008 to 2012 he was elected to Hamburgische Bürgerschaft. Since 2016 he is Senator for sport, and interrior of Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg.[3]

COVID affair

Grote violated his own regulations during the peak phase of the Corona pandemic. On the occasion of his re-election as senator, he celebrated with 30 people in a bar in Hafencity in 2021.[4]

Although Grote denied having violated the requirements, he paid the €1,000 fine without hesitation.[5]

Pimmelgate

Slogan at wall of Rote Flora

On Twitter, Grote accused a crowd in the Schanzenviertel that had violated Corona rules of “ignorance” and a “stupid action.” Another user commented “Andi, you’re such a dick.” ("Andi, Du bist so 1 Pimmel") Grote reported the man, then triggered a raid and the man's apartment was searched.

A poster with the slogan appeared on the Rote Flora and other places in Hamburg. Police officers had to paint over it and skirmished with activists who wrote the slogan down again several times.[6] Because of this “Pimmelgate” affair, Grote was criticized for only attracting ridicule and ridiculing his own Hamburg police force.[7]
