Anwaar ul Haq Kakar

Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar (Urdu: انوار الحق کاکڑ; Pashto: انوار الحق کاکړ‎; born 1971) is a Pakistani politician who is currently serving as the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. He succeeded Shehbaz Sharif.[3] He previously served as the spokesperson of the Government of Balochistan from 2015 to 2017.

Early life

Kakar started his political career in 2008. In 2013, he was elected on the ticket of the N League. Kakar received his primary education from St. Francis School, Quetta and later enrolled in Cadet College Kohat. He has a Master's degree in political science and sociology from University of Balochistan. He started his career by teaching at a school in his native town.

Political career

Kakar was elected to the Senate of Pakistan as an independent candidate for a general seat from Balochistan in 2018 Pakistani Senate election.[4][5] He took oath as Senator on 12 March 2018.[6]

He also remained Chairperson for the Committee of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development and members of other committees including the Business Advisory Committee, Finance and Revenue, Foreign Affairs, Science and Technology.[7]

He co-launched a new political party Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) in 2018.[8]

He was nominated to serve as Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan by the outgoing opposition leader and the outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The president Arif Alvi signed on the summary making him the 8th Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. He took oath on the 76th independence day of Pakistan, 14 August 2023.[9] He resigned from the Senate on 14 August 2023 and on the same day, his resignation was accepted by the Chairman of the Senate Sadiq Sanjrani.[10]

Personal life

Anwaar ul Haq belongs to Kakar tribe of Pashtuns who are primarily scattered across Northern Balochistan. Besides political activism, Kakar is also involved with various think tanks formulating Pakistan's foreign policy. Kakar is a keen observer of the geopolitics of South Asia, especially, Afghanistan-Pakistan relations. He is also on the visiting faculty of Command and Staff College, Quetta and National Defence University, Islamabad where Kakar delivers lecture on International Relations.[11]

Kakar is fluent in Pashto, Urdu, Persian, English, Balochi, and Brahui.[11]
