The people of Gopalganj had a long demand for a college in its soul part. The mass people of Gopalganj collected donation from themselves. At the same time, Khawaja Nazimuddin, the then Governor of Pakistan, came for a visit in Gopalganj. He was gifted with huge amount of money. But Sheikh Mujibur Rahman demanded the gifted money for establishing a college in the city. The Governor accepted the demand. That time, there were two educational institutions in Gopalganj: Sitanath Academy & Mathuranath Institution. Mathuranath Institute was situated in where Bangabandhu College is now. Sitanath Academy and Mathuranath Institution had been merged into one institution and named "Sitanath-Mathuranath Model School". In 1950, a college is established and named Quid-e-Azam Memorial College. After the Liberation War of Bangladesh, in 1971, the college is named "Bangabandhu Mahavidyalaya" after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. At 1 April 1974, government nationalized the college and hence the name becomes "Government Bangabandhu College".[1][2]
