Breaking the Ice (TV series)

Breaking the Ice [1][2] is a documentary television series following skating champion Rory Flack[3][4] and her groundbreaking journey leading the first all diverse, competitive synchronized ice skating team. The team is composed of ten middle and high school girls who endure rigorous training on and off the ice, and must manage team dynamics, as well as outspoken parents and skating rivals, on their way to the Nationals championship competition.[5][6]

The series premiered on July 6, 2023, on WE tv and three days later on the Allblk streaming site.[7] The first eight-episode season was produced for WE tv by ITV America's Sirens Media. Mioshi Hill,[8] Tim Cohen-Laurie[9] and Wendi Wan [10] are executive producers for Sirens Media.[11]

Also serving as executive producers on the series are Jon Crowley[12] and Burt Kearns.[13] Crowley and Kearns are creators of the series. The veteran award-winning television producers, writers, developers and showrunners conceived of, originally cast, and shepherded Breaking the Ice toward and through production, amid COVID pandemic lockdown and network delays, over a seven-year period.[14]

Rory Flack, the first Black woman to win the US Open Professional Figure Skating Championships and leader of Team DMV, based in the Washington, D.C. area, told People magazine that she hoped the series would “bring the urban streets onto the ice.” [16]
