History

Brooklyn Boy Bagels was started in 2013[1] by Brooklyn-born food journalist Michael Shafran, the first baker to bring New York bagels to Sydney.[2] He wanted to emulate the authentic process in his hometown for making bagels, including boiling the dough.[3] The company also produces a range of bakery goods, including pretzels, challah, sourdough and rye bread, babka and croissants. It sells a variety of bagel toppings, such as lox, pastrami and cream cheese.[4]

The company has operated from a variety of locations, including Matraville, [5] Marrickville,[6] Circular Quay,[7] and Surry Hills.[8] It also sells through other retail outlets[9] and farmers' markets.[10]

Awards and recognition

Vogue magazine has rated Brooklyn Boy amongst the best bagels in Australia.[11] Time Out magazine awarded the title of "Favourite Sandwich" to Brooklyn Boy in 2021.[12] It was also declared the "Best Bagel in Sydney" in 2013.[13]
