Summertime Ball

Capital's Summertime Ball is a mini-festival in London, held on either first or second Saturday or Sunday of June by the radio station Capital. The first ball was at Emirates Stadium in 2009, and it has since been held at Wembley Stadium. The 2020 Summertime Ball was to be held at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium because Wembley was due to host games of Euro 2020, but was eventually cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020

The 2020 Summertime Ball was due to be hosted on Saturday 6 June 2020 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, on 19 March 2020, Capital announced that it had cancelled the Ball due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Government issued advice surrounding the event.[20] The ball was due to return in 2021.[21] On 6 May 2020, Capital announced a replacement event called The Best of the Capital Summertime Ball. The two-hour special showcased highlights from the previous decade and was shown on Sky One, Capital FM, YouTube and Global Player from 5:00 pm BST on 16 May.[22][23]

2021

Summertime Ball did not take place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In its place, "Capital Up Close with Barclaycard" took place at London's Under the Bridge venue. Tickets were awarded to Capital FM listeners as competition prizes.

2022

This was the first Summertime Ball in three years. It took place on Sunday, 12 June at Wembley Stadium.

To advertise the event, a kick-off party was held at Global Studios in Leicester Square on 27 April 2022, hosted by Roman Kemp, Siân Welby and Sonny Jay. The DJs were MistaJam, Jax Jones and Marvin Humes.

This was Sonny Jay's last Summertime Ball as a host before he replaced Marvin Humes on Capital's late show.

After an introductory DJ set by MistaJam and Marvin Humes, Ed Sheeran opened the 2022 Summertime Ball at 14:00 BST, due to having a concert at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, later the same day. David Guetta was the closing act, his set starting at approximately 21:30. Maisie Peters, Sam Ryder and Nathan Dawe were also part of the line-up.

2023

The 2023 Summertime Ball took place on 11 June at Wembley Stadium. The line-up was announced on 24 and 25 April.

It was hosted by Capital Breakfast's Roman Kemp, Siân Welby and Chris Stark. This was Stark's first Summertime Ball since joining the station in October 2022. Highlights from the gig were shown on ITV1 and ITVX for the first time on 17 June 2023 from 7pm to 8:30pm BST.[24]

On 5 June 2023, it was announced that Lewis Capaldi had pulled out of the line-up for the ball due to mental and physical health concerns and to prepare for his set on the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival 2023. He made his statement on his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

On 9 June, it was announced that Tom Grennan would be the opening act in conjunction with his appearance with Joel Corry in Soccer Aid at Old Trafford the same day.
