Clemencia Rodallega

Clemencia Carabalí Rodallega is a Colombian human rights activist, industrial technologist, business administrator and politician. She is currently serving as presidential advisor on women affairs to President Gustavo Petro.[1] She is the founder of the Association of Afro-Descendant Women of Northern Cauca (ASOM).  She holds Woodrow Wilson Award and the National Award for the Defense of Human Rights in recognition of her human rights activism.[2]  

Activism

Clemencia Carabalí Rodallega began her activism in the 1990s along with other women advocating for economic independence for women and equal political participation including voting rights for black women.[3] She is a leading voice for the rights of Afro-descendant population and compensation for the victims of Colombia internal armed conflict in the Pacific Coast. She is the founder of Association for Afro-descendant Women of Norte del Cauca (ASOM), a coalition of ten women organization for the defense and promotion of Afro-Colombian cultural identities and socio-economic inclusion.[4][5]

She was often threatened with death due to her activism forcing her to go into hiding or leaving the country. In 2019, she was attacked by paramilitary groups. But despite the attacks she continues her activism. She was appointed presidential advisor on women affairs in September 2022 by President Gustavo Petro. She has been honored with multiple awards including National Award for the Defense of Human Rights in Colombia, 2019 and Woodrow Wilson Award for public service in 2021 in recognition of her activism.[6]
