Raised in Nashville, Tennessee, by his mother,[3] Williams' father did not have an ongoing relationship with his mother, who sued for child support when he was five years old, prompting his father's entry into the recording industry.[4] As an adult, he adopted his father's surname. The moniker "IV" refers to his status as the fourth generation of musicians beginning with his great-grandfather. (The name "Hank Williams IV" is used as a stage name by musician Ricky Fitzgerald, who claims to be an unrecognized great-grandson of Hank Williams.[4][5]) Williams would then spend his high school years with his father, and after he graduated, traveled the country to expand his music tastes by reportedly listening to bands from New Jersey to Louisiana.[3]

During this journey, Williams met and befriended Jason Dietz, a local record producer, and also met Laura Beth Jewell and Tylor Powell. These four worked together and formed IV and the Strange Band In April 2021, Williams and his band released their first single, Son of Sin.[6] In June 2022, they released their debut studio album, Southern Circus.[7][8]
