A.P. Laurenson
Andrew P. Laurenson (pseudonym Common Dead[1][2]) is an American recording artist from Chicago, Illinois.[3][4] Laurenson has also been documented as a writer and director in animation.[5][6][7]
Career
2009–2013: As Common Dead
Laurenson premiered the heavy metal project Common Dead in 2009,[8][9][10] which had been classified as melodic death metal[11] or thrash metal.[11] As the sole proprietor of the band, he performed all instrumentation for the recordings, performing lead/rhythm guitar and vocals for live occasions.[12]
A four-track EP was released in January 2011 entitled Interim Flesh, which experimented with industrial metal influences not typical of the band's style. The EP scored warm praise from critics.[13][14]
The project released an album Diatribe in February 2012. It was met with generally positive reviews from numerous sources.[12][15][16][17] Three music videos were produced for the album. One titled "Critical Mass" was broadcast on Underground Video TV.[18][19][20][21] The following year, the album Allegorize was released.[22][23]
Metal Underground posted an interview after a raw mix for a Fear Factory cover came out on YouTube. Common Dead recorded a cover for "Flashpoint" as one instrumentalist.[24] They also announced that new members would be joining the band for live performances. A break in activity was confirmed in 2013 as Laurenson moved towards other projects.[25]
2014–present: Self-titled work and remixes
Laurenson has released several electronic music albums under his birth name.[26][27] In 2016, he released a remix of the Cisco default hold music on YouTube which gained substantial popularity.[28]
A stripped-down remix of the song "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" was uploaded in 2016,[29] which had gone viral and later served as the basis for various trailers, including Rampage in 2018,[30] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II in 2022,[31] and The Last Voyage of the Demeter in 2023.[32]
Lords of Laggard Hill
Laurenson created the animated web series Lords of Laggard Hill in 2021 as the show's principal writer, animator and voice artist.[33][34] The series has produced 3 seasons.[35][36]
