Delhi University Students Union

The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) is a students' union at the University of Delhi. It is the representative body of the students from member colleges and university faculties. Also, each college has its own students union to which elections are held every year. The student elections are fought keenly and with great enthusiasm. In the past, several of the office bearers of Delhi University Students Union have gone on to hold public offices in central, state and local governments.[1]

DUSU elections

The elections to Delhi University Students Union are by direct voting by the students of the University faculties and member Colleges. Member colleges and University faculties have its own College or Faculty Students' Union. The DUSU is an University level umbrella organisation for University faculties and member colleges Students' Unions. The DUSU has four offices: President, Vice President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary.[2]

The elections are usually held in August -September of each year. As of 2019 there are total of 52 Delhi University colleges & faculties affiliated to DUSU.[3]

Notable Office Bearers of DUSU include Arun Jaitley who was a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and became the President of DUSU in 1974. Vijay Goel became the DUSU President in 1977-78. Ajay Maken was the General Secretary of Indian National Congress till 2015. He was elected as the President of DUSU in 1985. Alka Lamba is a former President of National Students Union of India (NSUI) and was the President of DUSU in 1995. Anil Jha Vats is a member of the BJP and was a former member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. He was the President of DUSU for 1997-98. Vijay Jolly was a former member of ABVP and is currently a member of BJP. He was elected the President of DUSU for 1980-81.[4]

DUSU elections, said to be world's largest election for a students' union, were last held in 2019. DUSU polls could not be held in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 while possible disruptions to the academic calendar prevented their conduct in 2022.

In 2023 Elections held on September 22, 2023 and results announced on September 23, 2023, Tushar Dedha ofthe ABVP won the President's post. Abhi Dahiya from the NSUI won the Vice President post whereas Aprajita and Sachin Basla - both from ABVP, respectively won the elections held for the posts of Secretary and Joint Secretary.
