Dorothy Theomin

Dorothy Michaelis Theomin (December 24, 1888 – October 11, 1966) was a New Zealand philanthropist and mountaineer.

Biography

Dorothy Theomin was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1888 as daughter of David Theomin.[1] Educated at Braemar House and Roedean School in Sussex, she later took charge of managing the family's Dunedin residence, Olveston.[1]

Theomin was involved in mountaineering in the Southern Alps from 1914 to 1933 and was associated with the New Zealand Alpine Club.[1] She also practiced mountain photography during this period.[1]

Later in life, Theomin engaged in philanthropic activities, participating in the Plunket Society and assisting the Red Cross during WWII.[1] She also supported the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and provided financial backing to artists and musicians.[1]

Upon her death in 1966 at Royal Terrace, she bequeathed her residence, Olveston, to the citizens of Dunedin.[1] She is buried in the family plot in Dunedin's southern cemetery.[1]
