Drumeo
Drumeo is an online drumming education platform co-founded in 2012 by Canadian drummer and businessman Jared Falk.[1] Headquartered in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, the subscription service features courses, lessons, and video performances from celebrity drummers and expert instructors.[2]
Drumeo is part of Musora Media Inc.,[3] a collective of music education brands built on a similar subscription platform with courses and student communities that focus on learning piano, guitar, and singing.
History
2005-2011: Early years
In 2005, drum teacher Jared Falk partnered with one of his students to film and sell instructional videos online. They eventually moved to DVDs, distributing them through eBay and their own personal website.[4]
The pair launched FreeDrumLessons.com in 2007,[5] the first dedicated site to feature a comprehensive library of online drum lessons. These videos began gaining traction online while YouTube was still in its infancy.
2012-present: Rebranding and growth
In 2012, Falk and his business partner launched Drumeo as a subscription service, describing it as “Netflix for drum lessons”.[6] As of June 2023, Drumeo has over 140,000 active subscribers,[7] over 1,500 video lessons,[8] and over 5,000 song play-alongs.[9]
Their YouTube channel has over 2.5 million subscribers[10] and multiple viral videos.[11][12][13][14]
Drumeo's lessons feature well-known drummers such as Jonathan Moffett, Chad Smith, Tommy Aldridge, Dennis Chambers, Larnell Lewis, Simon Phillips and Steve Smith.
Drumeo Awards
Since 2021, Drumeo has produced an awards program that recognizes top drummers.[15][16] The majority of award winners are decided by a public vote[17] while Drumeo handpicks recipients in several additional categories.[18]
The program's top accolade is the “Drummer Of The Year Award”. Past recipients are as follows:
2022: Chad Smith
2021: Travis Barker
There is also an award for lifetime achievement, called the "Buddy Rich Award". Past recipients are as follows:
2022: Phil Collins
2021: Steve Gadd
Reception
Drumeo won the DRUM! Magazine “Drummie” award for Best Educational Site in 2014 and 2015.[19][20] The company also received a nomination in the 2020 Modern Drummer Readers Poll in the “Best App/Online Instruction” category.[21]
