Early life and career

Odugbemi[4] was born in Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria in 1963.[5] He studied film and television production at Montana State University Bozeman Montana, USA (1979-1984). After graduating, he worked briefly at the Nigerian Television Authority and later as a film and radio producer at two advertising agencies in Lagos: LOWE-LINTAS and McCann-Erickson.

In 2008, Odugbemi produced Tinsel,[6] one of Nigeria’s longest-running series with over 3,500 episodes. In 2013, it was acclaimed as "the most followed and most successful drama on Nigerian television in recent times."[7]

In 2008, he produced Abobaku, a short film directed by Niji Akanni, and won the Most Outstanding Short Film at the Zuma Film Festival held in 2010 and Best Costume at the 6th Africa Movie Academy Awards, held in April 2010 at the Gloryland Cultural Center in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria.[8]

Odugbemi is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars)[9] and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (Emmys). He served as President of the Independent Producers Association of Nigeria (IPAN) from 2002-2006 and was a four-time Head Judge for the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), three-time Head Juror of the Uganda Film Festival, Juror of the Johannesburg International Film Festival South Africa, and a Juror/Mentor of the Netflix/UNESCO African Folktales Reimagined project.

He was the pioneer Academy Director of the Multichoice Talent Factory West Africa (2018-2022). He is a co-founder/director of the iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival. The festival has pursued its theme of “Africa in self-conversation” by championing films and stories about Africa.[10]

He received the Film Excellence Award from the Society of the Performing Arts of Nigeria in November 2013, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nigerian Film Corporation in 2018.[11]
