Francisco de Santiago Silva

Francisco de Santiago Silva (1926 - February 2, 2008) was a visual artist from Mexico. He is the author of works such as Cosmic Rose. He participated in many exhibitions.[Notes 1] De Santiago's fame and recognition within the art community is inspired in part by his academic accomplishments, as well as his talent as an artist.[Notes 2]

Biography

First years

Francisco de Santiago was born at home on El Santuario street in the city of Jerez de García Salinas, Zacatecas on March 26, 1926. He was one of 9 children. His adolescence was spent on the ranch that was owned by his family.

Studies

When the young Francis arrived in Mexico City at age 19, he enrolled in the Academy of San Carlos. There he learned different painting techniques and everything related to the arts. He took an interest in issues related to contemporary painting, which later came to define his work. He worked in mediums ranging from encaustic painting to oils and, towards the end of his life, acrylics. His work was characterized by geometric shapes and often featured real world objects.

Later work

Francisco de Santiago remained active late in life. His leadership and the fruitfulness of his work have always been recognized and are reflected in the appointments and positions he held.[Notes 3] In Zacatecas, his work is exhibited in places like the Manuel Felguérez Museum of Abstract Art and the Municipal House of Culture, where one of the rooms bears his name.

  1. He won the award of Masters of Fine Arts and in 1992 received a medal for Japan's international work in developing a washi paper
  2. He gained the Plastic Arts degree on the UNAM and he made his doctor degree on the University of Spain. He was the director of Doctor Degrees and was coordinator of the high importance of the UNAM
  3. He was head of the graduate division of the National School of Plastic Arts of the UNAM (1986-1990), Program Coordinator high academic standards of the Bachelor of Visual Arts (1991-1998), among other responsibilities that were conferred. Among the teachers held the Graduate Studies Department and was coordinator of the High Demand Draft in the National School of Plastic Arts
