Freemen's Party

Freemen's Party (Romanian: Partidul Oamenilor Liberi, Hungarian: Szabad Emberek Pártja, German: Partei Der Freien Menschen, abbr. POL) is a regionalist and localist political party in Romania. The party was founded in October 2015 by Dan Mașca, Cătălin Hegheș, Radu Bălaș and Eugen Tothpal.[1]

Ideology and political program

According to the president of POL, Dan Mașca, the party does not have a clearly established ideology. Broadly speaking, it is a regionalist party that opts for participatory democracy and decentralization. Also, POL aims to be a party for all ethnicities in Romania, opting for the construction of local communities of Romanians, Hungarians, Germans, Roma etc. to live together in harmony.[1][2]

The political program of POL is divided into 8 chapters as follows:

  1. Development of local democracy
  2. Improve relation between public authorities and citizens
  3. Encouraging entrepreneurship and improving the business environment
  4. Strengthening social cohesion and inclusion
  5. Priority for tourism
  6. Fair access to public funding
  7. Sustainable urban development
  8. Education

Electoral sign

The permanent and electoral sign of the Freemen's Party is represented by two joined palms, the abbreviated name "POL", the full name "Freemen's Party ", the Hungarian name "Szabad Emberek Pártja" and the German name "Partei der Freien Menschen".[3]

Electoral history

According to the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC), at the 2016 local elections, Freemen's Party has obtained just 5 local councilors mandates. At the 2020 local elections, the party has obtained 2 county councilors mandates, 1 mayor mandate and 35 local councilors mandates.[4]

Potential deletion from the party register

Although since 2015 the party law has become much more permissive, the term local party does not appear in the law. Therefore, many parties – including POL – that do not meet the conditions of the law were or are at risk of being dissolved.[5]
