Gangguan Port

Gangguan Port (강구안),[1] situated in Tongyeong, South Korea, is a fishing harbour. The mountainous and maritime surroundings of the South Gyeongsang Province attract thousands of tourists every year.[1]

Tourism

Gangguan is working to offer itself mainly at the tourist level and to excel in maritime culture, especially gastronomy and art. It offers a variety of food locations, most notably those of Chungmu-style gimbap, Tongyeong honey bread stores and restaurants serving seafood, just as the Joongang Conventional Fish Market.[1] Another factor for local tourism is the surrounding landscapes. The mountains and the maritime climate, as well as the Hallyeohaesang National Park.[2]

At night, Gangguan Port is illuminated by lights, illuminating Tongyeong as well. The Dongbaek, an illuminated seagull statue in Gangguan, plays a significant role in promoting Tongyeong, which was designated as South Korea's first Night Tourism Specialized City in 2022.[3] Plans for night tourism in the region include the expansion of nighttime outdoor events, just as "Tonight Tongyeong!" to Gangguan Port.

Sight-seeing attractions include a restored turtle ship ("Geobukseon"), developed by Yi to repel Japanese Invaders during the Imjin War.[4]

History

These Turtle Ships led by Admiral Yi Sun-sin during mid-Joseon times, played an important role in the naval battles against Japanese forces. Such as in the 1597 Battle of Myeongnyang and the 1592 Battle of Hansando near Tongyeong. Following Yi Sun-sin's leadership, Tongyeong became a strategic naval hub, hosting the Tongyeong Samdo Sugun military district from 1604. This district served as a central naval station defending Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong provinces for Joseon.[5]

To commemorate Yi's historic deeds, the Chungryelsa Shrine was built.[2]
