Ghang Lhamo

Ghang Lhamo (born 1967) is a Tibetan politician and member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile. She is the general secretary of Gu-Chu-Sum Tibet Movement and works as an editor at Bangchen, a Tibetan news outlet.[1][2]

Life in Tibet

Ghang Lhamo was born in the eastern region of Tibet. She studied at the Tibetan People's School before proceeding to the Tibet University. At the university she participated in a student protest against policies of China. On 30 December 1989, she was arrested for her participation in the protest and jailed in Taktsé where she spent a year. In the prison she was tortured resulting in serious health complications. Her family bribed prison officials before she could receive medical treatment. Later she was transferred from Taktsé prison to Gusta where she spent three years with forced hard labour.[3] With worsening health issues, she was again transferred to another prison in Lhasa where she worked in a school for orphans before being released from prison in 1993 after serving out her term.[4]

Exile

Lhamo escaped to India in 2002 where she met Dalai Lama and appeared on BBC and other media outlets discussing the situation Chinese authorities subjected her.[3] She worked at the Khawa Karpo Tibetan Cultural Center as an editor and journalist writing in Chinese language for Bangchen. She was elected to the Tibetan parliament in 2011.[5][6]
