He attended College of Medicine at University of Mosul, Iraq and qualified in 1970.[1] He then completed a PhD in neuroanatomy at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School in London, UK in 1978.


He worked at colleges of medicine in Basrah, Mosul before being appointed as the founding dean of Tikrit University College of Medicine (TUCOM) in Tikrit, Iraq.[2][3] The medical school followed the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum which was not used in Iraq before. He was then appointed as the founding dean of Hadhramout University College of Medicine (HUCOM) in Yemen.[1]

In 2000, he started working at the World Health Organisation Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (WHO/EMRO)[4] as Regional Advisor for Human Resources Development in Egypt. He retired in 2009.[1]
