Gil Hanse

Gilbert Hanse (born August 12, 1963) is an American golf course designer. Hanse, along with his business partner Jim Wagner, was selected to design the Rio 2016 Olympic Golf Course, the first Olympic venue to host golf since 1904.[1]

Education

Attended secondary school at Hunter Tannersville High school in Tannersville, New York and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Denver. Hanse earned a master's in landscape architecture from Cornell University in 1989. Hanse was the recipient of the William Frederick Dreer Award, which allowed him to spend a year in Great Britain studying the history of golf architecture.[2]

Golf Course Design

In 1993 Hanse founded Hanse Golf Course Design. His longtime design partner Jim Wagner joined the firm in 1995. Friend and golf historian Geoff Shackelford has also assisted in the design of several projects.[3] Other members of the design team include Kevin Murphy, Ben Hillard, Bill Kittleman, Tom Naccarato, Amy Alcott. Hanse Golf Design's in house golf construction team is named Caveman Construction. Hanse has mentored younger golf architects in various projects as shapers, notably Kyle Franz at The 2016 Rio Olympic Golf Course, Blake Conant at Oakland Hills Country Club (South),[4] Kye Goalby at Pinehurst Number 4,[5] Angela Moser at Los Angeles Country Club(South).
