Gloria Shala

Gloria Sengha Panda Shala (born 20 April 1993) is a Congolese lawyer, human rights and prodemocracy activist. She is the cofounder of Vigilance Citoyenne  (VICI), a prodemocracy movement and one of the notable voices in campaigns against sexual slavery of underaged girls. she has been arrested several times by state authorities for her prodemocracy activism.[1] In 2018, Human Rights Research Institute (IRDH) awarded her Human Rights Champion Award of the year.[2][3][4]

Education and activism

Shala from Kibombo, Maniema province was born in Barumbu, a commune in the north of the Congolese capital Kinshasa. She studied law at the University of Kinshasa and was licensed to practice in 2016. At the university, she formed a group known as Association des jeunes pour la democratie au Congo (Conscious Youth) focused on awakening the conscience of Kinshasa people.[5][6][7]

In 2016, she cofounded Vigilance Citoyenne (VICI) a prodemocracy movement where she served as the coordinator. Same year she was arrested on the premises of National Intelligent Agency and detained for a week for her involvement in the Bye Bye Kabila campaign.[8] In 2018, she was arrested along with 16 other people and detained for six days at the Kalamu High Court Prosecutor's Office for launching Congolese koteka bomoto nayo te pona nzala. Later they were transferred to  the Kinshasa Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Center (Makala Central Prison) where they were held in preventive detention for 11 days before being given provisional release.[9][10][11]
