Gwadar Shipyard

The Gwadar Shipyard is a hub for constructing and mending ships, situated within Gwadar, a maritime center in Balochistan, Pakistan. This endeavor is overseen jointly by the national and regional administrations of Pakistan, which have formalized an agreement in the form of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the Gwadar shipyard. The initiation of construction activities is contingent upon the finalization of the project's feasibility study and is anticipated to conclude within a span of two to three years.[1][2][3] Funding of the Gwadar Shipyard being upgraded to Rs.100 million in defense budget of 2023.[4]

History

The potential of Gwadar to function as a significant deep-water seaport was initially recognized in 1954, even during its period under Omani control.[5] However, it wasn't until 2007 that plans for constructing the port came to fruition. The port was officially inaugurated by Pervez Musharraf following four years of construction, with a total expenditure of $248 million.[6] In 2021, Pakistan unveiled its intention to initiate the establishment of a fresh shipyard in Gwadar. This new shipyard holds the promise of invigorating the commercial shipbuilding and repair sector, generating job opportunities, and fostering economic advancement.[1]
