If Only I Could Hibernate (Mongolian: Баавгай болохсон, Baavgai Bolohson) is 2023 Mongolian film of the film production company Amygdala Films.[1] It was written and directed by Zoljargal Purevdash with the Mongolian actor Battsooj Uurtsaikh as the lead actor in the role of Ulzii.

If Only I Could Hibernate is the first Mongolian film to play in Official Selection at Cannes Film Festival. It is a co-production between Zoljargal Purevdash's Mongolian production house Amygdala Films and Paris-based Urban Factory,[2] headed by producers Frédéric Corvez and Maeva Savinien.[3]

Plot

A poor but prideful teenage boy Ulzii who lives in the yurt area of Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar is determined to win a physics competition for a scholarship.[4] Still, his illiterate mother finds a job in the countryside and leaves him with his siblings in the middle of the winter.

Release

It had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2023, in the Un Certain Regard section.[5] It is also invited at the 28th Busan International Film Festival in 'A Window on Asian Cinema' section and will be screened in October 2023.[6]
