Early life and education

Sapega was born in St.Petersburg, Russia, to a family with just one parent. He developed hearing loss after receiving antibiotic treatment for pneumonia at the age of two. He stopped responding to sounds, which was how his mother discovered it. His hearing impairment got worse upon taking an antibiotic banned 10 years earlier in Europe. They moved to Varberg, a small town on Sweden’s west coast.[6][7]

Sapega graduated from Grundskola in Söderskolan. He was able to finish his bachelor's degree in Hotell och restaurangverksamhet at the Berufsschule Altmünster. He also studied Hotell & Restaurang at Peder Skivares Culinary School in Varberg, Sweden.[8]

Career

Sapega's hearing impairment doesn't stop him from cooking. He had several experiences in a professional kitchen, some of which are as follows:

●    Chef De Partie at Camp Stewart for Boys, Varbergs Stadshotell & Asia Spa, Hilton Stockholm Slussen,  and Grupp F12 in Sweden[9][5]

●    Sous Chef at Frantzén Group in Stockholm, Sweden, and The Ritz London [10][11]

Sapega also works full-time at Gordon Ramsay Restaurants.[12][10][13]

He also works as Chef de cuisine at the Embassy of Sweden in London, UK.

Awards

Sapega is one of the top deaf chefs in the world and the only person to win two medals in the Culinary World Cup for Deaf Chefs. The S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2015 worldwide talent search identified Sapega as one of the top young cooks in Scandinavia.[14][15]

Personal life

He is married to Laura Victoria Sapega, a native of Ukraine and a fellow member of the deaf community. Their first child was born on October 26, 2021.[3]
