Early life and career

Jan-Harm Pol was born on September 4, 1942, in Wateren, Drenthe, in the Netherlands. Pol grew up on his family's dairy farm.[2] Pol met his wife, Diane Dalrymple, when he was a foreign exchange student at Mayville High School in 1961.

In 1970, Pol graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine at Utrecht University. Pol and his wife moved to Harbor Beach, Michigan, where Pol worked for a veterinarian practice for 10 years. He moved to Weidman, Michigan, where he started Pol Veterinary Services in 1981. Pol Veterinary Service treats animals from surrounding neighborhoods due to the lack of veterinary services in rural Michigan.[3]

In 2013, Pol testified before the Michigan House of Representatives in favor of a bill to prohibit authorities from investigating reports of misconduct or allegations based upon information obtained from viewing the broadcast of a reality program but the bill died in committee.[4]

Pol was fined $500 in 2014 and had his license put on probation by the Michigan Board of Veterinary Medicine for not wearing proper surgical attire during treatment of a Boston terrier.[5] A year later, the sentencing was overturned by the Michigan Court of Appeals, which reversed and remanded, holding inter alia that there was no competent evidence that there was a breach of the standard of care.[6][7]

In 2013, Pol received an honorary doctorate of public service from Central Michigan University.[8]

Personal life

Jan and Diane have three children. Kathy, Charles and Diane Jr. All were adopted by Jan and Diane Pol.

Kathlene Pol was born on August 21, 1973, which makes her age 49 years old. She holds American citizenship and belongs to the Caucasian ethnicity. Kathy was raised on a farm in Michigan where she learned about taking care of animals and helped her father on farm calls. She attended Chippewa Hills High School in Remus, Michigan, and following graduation, she enrolled at Delta College in Bay City, Michigan. She currently works as Phlebotomist in McLaren Bay Region.

Diane Louise Pol is the eldest child in the Pol family. She is the biological daughter of Joann who passed away in 1982. Joann was diagnosed with cancer in 1981, and in desperate times, she trusted the responsibility of her daughter to Diane Pol. While Diane Pol was already raising Charles Pol and Kathy Pol she decided to show a big heart and took in Diane Jr who at the time was 9 years old. Even though not in the paper Diane Jr. lived as their child before officially getting adopted at the age of 18.

Charles Pol was born in Central Michigan’s farm country on March 6, 1979. The birthdate makes his age 43 years. Growing up in Michigan, Charles worked as his father’s sidekick as early as 5 years old. He used to assist Dr. Pol at the clinic, helping out on farm calls and taking care of the vast number of pets and farm animals. Charles loved working with animals but when the time came he was determined to make his own path. Thankfully, Dr. Pol & Diane Pol were not opposed to the idea, in fact, they encouraged him to pursue a career of his taste.

Some people may not know, but Dr. Pol is in fact, color blind. So when he has to deal with clients that require testing and it requires him to have to look at something and he can't tell because it's colorful, he normally falls back onto his other vet Dr. Brenda Grettenberger.
