John Hewko
John Hewko is a lawyer and public policy scholar who is the current General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. He has contributed to publications including the Chicago Tribune,[1] CNN,[2] and The Wall Street Journal.[3]
Career
Hewko previously worked for the Chicago-based law firm Baker McKenzie between 1989 and 2004,[4] serving as an international partner with the firm's newly-established Moscow office, and as managing partner in Kyiv and Prague. In 1991, he worked as part of the working group which completed an initial draft of the Ukrainian constitution.[5] Hewko had returned to the country of his parents' birth, and initially began reproducing copies of the Ukrainian declaration of independence.[6] He was then brought onto the International Council Advisers, a group of Westerners advising the new Ukrainian government on democratic and economic matters, and which was funded by George Soros.[7]
Between 2004 and 2009, Hewko worked for the Millennium Challenge Corporation, negotiating foreign assistance agreements for 26 countries, and has also previously for the Carnegie Endowment's Democracy and Rule of Law Program.[8] In 2011, he was appointed general secretary and CEO of Rotary International.[4] He holds degrees from Harvard University, Oxford University, and Hamilton College, New York.[9]
Personal life
Hewko is the son of Ukrainian immigrants, who moved to the United States in 1949 after four years in German displaced persons camps.[10] He lives with his wife, Marga, in Evanston, Illinois.[5]
