After the death of his father in the Battle of Bannockburn , John inherited his possessions and titles, but he himself died soon after.[1] After his death, the Marshals line died out, as he was the last male member of the family. The heir to his estates was his sister, Hawise, wife of Robert Morley, 2nd Baron Morley. Although she and her descendants were entitled to the title of Baron Marshal, they never officially claimed it, but Robert Morley did inherit the position of Marshal of Ireland.[2]
