Production
After the production of Naan Thaan Siva was postponed as a result of Thirrupathi Brothers' financial problems, R. Panneerselvam announced in September 2016 that he would collaborate with Vijay Sethupathi for a film.[1] Produced by A. M. Rathnam, the team approached Keerthy Suresh to play the lead role later that month, but the actress did not sign the project owing to schedule clashes.[2] Ritika Singh was initially signed on to play the lead role, but was later replaced by Lakshmi Menon before production had begun.[3] Lakshmi Menon later pulled out of the film citing an injury and was replaced by Tanya Ravichandran. Bobby Simha agreed to play the antagonist in the film, despite earlier opting to star only in leading roles.[4]
Following a launch event held in December 2016, the team began filming sequences in Theni during January 2017.[5] The motion poster of this film is planned to release on 13 July 2017.[6] Its reported that, due to indefinite strike announced by Film Employees Federation of South India, Karuppan team is waiting to film few portions of the movie.[7] The satellite rights of the film were bagged by Sun TV (India),.[8]
Plot
Karuppan lives by earning as daily wager although he has land for farming. His father died at early stage and mother was in illness condition. He is accompanied by his maternal uncle. He is very much talented in bull taming (jallikattu) sport. Mayi was a well respected man in the village. He has a younger sister named Anbu and searching for right groom for her. On a jallikattu event, Mayi challenge Karuppan to tame his bull. Upon their conversation,he told Karuppan that he will get his sister married to Karuppan if he tamed his bull. Karuppan then tamed Mayi's bull. Initially reluctant Anbu, then married Karuppan due to his good character and for his brother. But Mayi's brother in law (played by Bobby Simha) who had a crush on Anbu wants to separate Karuppan and Anbu. He hatches and executes plans for that. Thus the story goes on and moves to the climax where all his plans exposed and he gets killed by Karuppan. Due to his unwavering caring and love for sister, Mayi surrendered for this killing. He is sentenced to jail upto five years. Karuppan and Anbu come to meet Mayi at jail and share the pregnancy detail of Anbu to Mayi and thus ending happily as they wait for newborn and release of Mayi.
Controversy
Kaathan, the owner of the bull, which is used in the first look poster has reported that, the producers of this movie has not got his permission to use Komban's picture (bull's name is Komban). He has also said that, his Komban has not been tamed by anyone so far and the bull has huge fan following for that reason. Now Kaathan is demanding an unconditional apology from the director, producer and the protagonist. The problem was solved after Vijay Sethupathi met Kaathan.[9]
