Katherine Hoover

Katherine Hoover (December 2, 1937  September 21, 2018) was an American composer of Contemporary classical music and Chamber music, flutist, teacher of Musical composition and Music theory, poet, and later a conductor of her own music.[1] Her career as a composer began when few women composers earned recognition in Classical music in the 1970s.[2][3] As shown in her list of known work, she has composed pieces for solo flute, mixed ensembles, chamber orchestra, choir, full orchestra and many other combinations of instruments and voice. Some of her flute pieces incorporated Native American themes.[4][5]

Her work has received many honors, including a National Endowment for the Arts Composer's Fellowship, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in composition, the National Flute Association's Lifetime Achievement Award where she is remembered by the as an "artist, flutist, teacher, entrepreneur, poet, and, most notably, a distinguished composer."[6] Also, there are two works where she cowrote under the pseudonym Kathryn Scott.[7][8]

Early life and education

In keeping with her maternal heritage, Hoover's mother returned to her hometown of Elkins, West Virginia, where Katherine Lacey Hoover was born on December 2, 1937. The family initially resided near Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., but relocated to Philadelphia at the onset of World War II to support her father's contributions to the war effort. Her mother was a talented painter, artist, and editor, while her father pursued a career in biochemistry.[9][10]

Katherine's passion for music ignited at the tender age of three when she was spellbound by the melodies of Mozart, she recalls:

“When I was about three, I think, I remember standing in front of a large record player, and being totally entranced by something I was hearing, which I believe was Mozart. “That was it,...”[11]

Despite their lack of musical training, Katherine's parents wholeheartedly supported her artistic inclinations. They even acquired a piano discarded by neighbors during a move, and her father's clever gesture of offering a drink to the mover secured the instrument for her. Katherine persistently begged for piano lessons, and at the age of five, her dreams were realized when she began her musical education.[11] Katherine remembered those early days with affection, saying:

"[her parents] would play a game, just putting their hands down anywhere in any combination and ask me what notes they were playing. It was amazing ear training.”[11]

By the time she reached fifth grade in primary school, she was offered the opportunity to learn the clarinet. Katherine chose the flute as her second instrument, recounting:

"...which I hated. I didn’t like the biting, or the pressure, and worst of all, it was in the wrong key(!). So the minute I was handed a flute, that was it.”[11]

Hoover's high school years were marked by a rich musical education. She participated in various musical endeavors, including bands, marching bands, the Eastern Pennsylvania State Band, and as a member of the "Quintones" singers for five years. Her talent led to numerous radio and early television appearances.

Hoover embarked on her academic journey in general studies at the University of Rochester in 1955. After two years, she followed through with her plans to transfer to the Eastman School of Music. Juxtaposed to the renowned "Nadia Boulanger teaching composers in France for decades, Hoover's composition classes left a bad impression. Katherine's composition classes at Eastman left her disillusioned. She remarked,

"There were no women involved with composition at all. [I got] rather discouraged – being the only woman in my classes, being ignored and so forth."[11][12]

Although she wasn't allowed to graduate from her chosen undergraduate program in composition, she graduated with honors, earning a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory in 1959. Her achievements at Eastman also included a double major and the coveted Performer’s Certificate in Flute, an honor that afforded winners a solo performance with an orchestra.”[9][11][13]

Hoover's introduction to the American Flute School movement occurred during her time at the Eastman School of Music, where she studied under Joseph Mariano, one of William Kincaid's notable students.[1] Mariano's stature clearly demonstrated being pursued by Toscanini, Fritz Reiner and Eugene Ormandy at various times through his career.[14]

Influences

William Kincad

After graduation Hoover spent two years studying with William Kincaid and Hungarian pianist Agi Jambor. Katherine recalls:

“Kincaid was a justly famous flutist and teacher. I learned so much from him, in particular the phrasing of the Kincaid/Tabuteau school, which became the basis not only of my playing, but also of my musical understanding and writing. None of my theory classes had taught me how music actually moves in time and beats, and the problem with bar lines. Kincaid’s standards were very high, and I worked quite hard!"[11]

Hoover also felt privileged to study with Mme. Agi Jambor who was a World War II refugee from Hungary. Jambor was a distinguished pianist, specializing in Bach, known quite well before the war. Hoover shared:

"I got to perform with her, but most of all to sit and listen to her play and speak about Bach. She had been given a place to live, teach, and perform at Bryn Mawr College, and I had a job as a warden at an undergraduate dormitory there.”[11]

Later, in Hoover's career, during her time as a member and board member of The New York Flute Club, she wrote that she owed "much of her success to her mentor, William Kincaid, teaching her more about music than any other composer".[15]

Teaching career

Juilliard Preparatory School

Several years after graduating, Hoover established herself in New York as a flutist and teacher. From 1962–1967, Hoover taught flute at the preparatory division of the Juilliard School as well as a few other small schools, including the Third Street Music School.[9][12][16] During this period, she married John Schwab in 1964.[17]

Manhattan School of Music

Hoover began teaching flute and music theory at the Manhattan School of Music, (1969-1984) where she learned a great deal about compositional techniques, from carefully analysis of a wide spectrum of music scores.[11][15] She continued her graduate studies and received her Master of Music in Music Theory in 1973. She was a faculty member of Manhattan School of Music for eleven years.[9][18]

Teachers College, Columbia University

Hoover became a faculty member at the Teachers College, Columbia University (1984-1989), where she taught theory and composition to graduate students.[19]

Composer

Hoover‘s life as a composer started slowly, few were aware that as a student, at a time she was unaware of any outstanding women composers.[20] A decade later, once established in New York, Hoover’s first publication was her work the Three Carols (1972) for SSA chorus and flute, published by Carl Fischer.[16][20] It was during this period, as a free-lance flutist, she worked for various ballet and opera companies.[2]

Hoover's growth as a composer was signified being honored as a finalist for the Kennedy Center Friedheim Award's Outstanding New American Chamber Work award (1978). Her successes continued, becoming a finalist once again and being awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Composer's Fellowship (1979).

Of her compositions she wrote "I have feelings of pride for the successes writing works for specific performers using other instruments...Stitch-te Naku for Cello and Orchestra, for cellist Sharon Robinson and [the] Clarinet Concerto, for jazz clarinetist Eddie Daniels."[10][21]

Hoover co-founded Papagena Press in 1988 with her husband (Richard Goodwin, married 1985) to publish her works. The first piece to be published was Kokopelli (1990), a work for solo flute inspired by the Hopi tribe and the American Southwest.[2] It won the National Flute Association's Newly Published Music Competition (1991). This was Hoover's second of six NFA Newly Published Music awards.[6][22]

Compositional Style

Hoover’s unique compositional style bears the unmistakable imprint of her mentors, Joseph Mariano and William Kincaid.[23] One foundational aspect of her music, as she herself acknowledges, is the concept of transitioning from a weak beat to a strong beat—a lesson she imbibed from Mariano and Kincaid. The conventional notation system, while valuable, can sometimes overshadow the importance of auditory perception. Barlines, like imposing stop signs, are inserted before each downbeat in musical notation, sending a clear visual signal to halt the musical flow. Hoover's desire for long, unimpeded musical phrases led her to break free from these restrictive walls imposed by barlines. Her compositions, liberated from such constraints, invite musicians to respond not only to the written notes but also to the sounds of the piece and the acoustics of the performance space, influencing tempo, interpretation, and the duration of rests and fermatas.[20]

While Hoover's formal training under her mentors is evident, she modestly acknowledges her journey as a composer involved a significant degree of self-discovery. During her tenure as a theory teacher at the Manhattan School, she delved deeply into the intricacies of compositional techniques, further enriching her musical arsenal.[11] This scholarly pursuit went hand in hand with her remarkable gift of perfect pitch, which allowed her to explore how individuals interact with and interpret sound. This profound insight became invaluable as she advanced her own creative journey as a composer, continually searching for the distinctive, as stated by Kristine H. Burns, Ed.[24]

"Hoover composes with the effects peculiar to each individual instrument in mind, incorporating such effects into the thematic and emotive content of the work at hand. . . . [While some] demonstrate a great gift for expressive lyricism, . . . [others] are notable for rhythmically dynamic passages laced with incisive dissonance but often mingled with elements of jazz and well-timed humor."

What has evolved is a compositional style renowned for its distinct character, often described as a "romantic, often pictorial atonal style." Hoover's music is celebrated for its clarity and eloquence, with moments of breathtaking beauty emerging from her occasionally pungent harmonies.[25][26]

Hoover's compositions consistently draw inspiration from a diverse array of influences. For instance, her solo flute compositions, such as "Kokopeli," "Winter Spirits," and "To Greet the Sun," resonate with the evocative sounds of Native American music and the cultural richness of the Hopi tribe from the American Southwest.[2] In "Eleni: A Greek Tragedy," an orchestral tone poem, she found inspiration in Nicholas Gage's literary work, "Eleni." Hoover's "Medieval Suite" draws from Barbara Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous Fourteenth Century." "Night Skies" was born from a captivating painting, reflecting her fascination with the starry night sky. This penchant for drawing from diverse sources imbues her music with a vivid, pictorial quality that deeply resonates with audiences.[2][11][27]

Quotations and Manipulations

Hoover adeptly uses musical quotations and skillfully adapts melodies from other composers. Her compositions feature these quotations seamlessly interwoven with her original material and harmonies, resulting in a rich tapestry of musical influences. For example, in "Celebration," a composition written for Joseph Mariano's ninetieth birthday, Hoover artfully juxtaposed her thematic material with direct quotations from renowned flute works, retaining their original form. This skillful incorporation of quotations showcases her ability to blend musical traditions and create captivating hybrids. Notably, her use of musical quotation is not always overt, as seen in the innovative ways she quotes Guillaume de Machaut's "Virelai No. 17, Dame, vostre doulz viaire debonair" in the first movement of "Medieval Suite." This exemplifies her talent for manipulating melodies and integrating these adaptations with her original material.[12][26] This is confirmed by Cathy Hancock Hicks:[28]

“Hoover openly borrows from the compositional techniques of other composers. At Eastman, she worked with a student of Hindemith, … and became familiar with Hindemith’s theories of consonance and dissonance. Bartok also influenced Hoover’s music, particularly in the harmonies she utilizes… related to the “split-root” or “major-diminished” chord… [as heard in the] final movement of Medieval Suite. Bartok’s influence is also clear in the title of her first woodwind quintet, Homage to Bartok (1975).”

Use of the Abstract

Hoover's ability to craft musical quotations extends beyond the overt, as seen in the subtle and innovative ways she incorporates them into her compositions. For instance, in the first movement of "Medieval Suite," she masterfully quotes Guillaume de Machaut's "Virelai No. 17" in fragmented form, altering its pitch level. Subsequently, an extended quote appears at the original pitch level, achieved through the use of harmonics overblown at the twelfth. These adaptations seamlessly merge with her original material. Throughout the composition, listeners encounter additional musical quotations, including references to the iconic "Dies Irae" in the final movement, titled "Demon's Dance."[12]

Katherine Hoover's musical insight is profound, as she succinctly states, "Being proficient in an instrument offers a distinct advantage, as it provides an in-depth understanding of the intricacies involved in creating music at a high level. It fosters a deep respect for performers and their unique needs."[26] This intimate knowledge of instruments, particularly the flute, is evident in her idiomatic flute compositions. However, her compositional prowess extends far beyond the flute, encompassing a wide range of instruments and ensemble configurations, including orchestral and concertos. While her creative journey has explored various musical avenues, a significant portion of her work centers on chamber compositions—a pragmatic choice, given the evolving landscape of orchestral programming and conductor involvement.[26]

Katherine Hoover's music thrives on the interplay of extra-musical references, skillful adaptation of other composers' melodies, and the harmonious fusion of these elements with her original compositions. The result is a body of work that captivates with its vivid imagery and inventive musicality. She maintains a delicate balance between musical expression and performer considerations, always striving to ensure that even challenging passages maintain their lyrical elegance.

Perhaps the greatest praise of Katherine Hoover’s ability comes from composer John Corigliano, who describes her as an extraordinary composer with a wide and fascinating musical vocabulary, dazzling craftsmanship, and the promise of well-deserved recognition on a broader scale.[29]

Promoting women in music

Hoover was involved with women's arts organizations and has worked to bring the works of women composers to the public's notice. She began work with the Women's Inter-Art Center in New York (1977. Here she organized Festivals I, II, and III of Women's Music which presented music by 55 historical and contemporary women composers.[22][30]

She was the composer in residence for the Fourth Festival of Women Composers at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1996).

Poetry

Hoover had always written poetry since her youth finding both a striking difference and similarity between music and words. "This Way About"(2015).[31] was her first book of poetry where she shares glimpses into her life.[32]
