La Costa Canyon High School (LCC) 33.07350°N 117.23039°W / 33.07350; -117.23039 is a public high school located in Carlsbad, California. It is an International Baccalaureate World School and is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District, serving the communities of Encinitas, south Carlsbad, Leucadia, Olivenhain, and Cardiff.[3]

La Costa Canyon enrolls an estimated 1,800 students in grades 9–12. The school receives accreditation approval from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).[4] Concurrent enrollment programs are provided in large by MiraCosta College.[5]

Justin Conn has been principal of La Costa Canyon High School since July 2022.[6]

General information

La Costa Canyon High School enrolled 1,834 students during the 2020-2021 school year.[7] The school follow a semester schedule where students can enroll in up to seven courses per school year. LCC the only International Baccalaureate World School in the district, offering the IB Diploma Programme since 2019. The pupil-teacher ratio is approximately 24:1. Approximately 95% of the students are college bound. The district does not rank students or name valedictorian or salutorian.[8] An estimated 25 percent of the student body receives the State Seal of Biliteracy.

Student body

The student body in 2021-2022 was roughly 72.6% white, 17% Hispanic or Latino, 3.5% Asian, Filipino, and Pacific Islander, 1.2% African American, and 0.4% American Indian, with the remaining students having identified as multiracial.[1] Roughly 14% of students are served by the special education programs, and 3.8% are classified as English Learners.

LCC ASB, officially recognized as the Associated Student Body, is the student union at La Costa Canyon. It organizes and manages all student activities and events.

LCC students can participate in more than 45 extracurricular student clubs, a nationally-recognized Speech and Debate program, the LCC Theatre Company, The Maverick Brigade (the only marching band in the district), and the PALs (Peer Assisted Listeners) program.

Faculty

Justin Conn has been principal since July 2022, preceded by Reno Medina.[9] Leo Fletes, Nathan Reinking, and Brenda Robinette serve as assistant principals.

La Costa Canyon has 110 certificated staff members and 47 full-time classified staff members. Certificated staff includes 96 teachers, five school counselors, one wellness counselor, two school psychologists, one school social worker, one speech therapist, and three assistant principals. Classified staff includes special education instructional assistants, one bilingual instructional assistant, two AVID tutors, one athletic trainer, nutrition services workers, two campus supervisors, clerical staff, custodial staff, one health technician, and one theater technician.[10]

Academics

La Costa Canyon is the only school in the district that offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. During the 2018-2019 school year, LCC began to offer International Baccalaureate program. The first cohort of candidates graduated and earned full IB diplomas in June 2020.[11] In July 2023, the district announced that all 13 candidates received IB diplomas, the first cohort to have a full passing rate.

LCC offers 22 Advanced Placement (AP) courses. During the 2020-2021 school year, LCC students took 1014 AP exams, and the AP pass rate was 73%.

Athletics

La Costa Canyon is a member of the California Interscholastic Federation, the governing body for high school sports in the state of California. LCC has many teams ranked highly on both a national and statewide level and has produced numerous league, CIF, and Open Division titles, and professional sports players. Over 85% of the student body competes in school sports teams and clubs.[12]
