Sanat Kumara

According to Theosophical writings, Sanat Kumara is regarded as the "Lord" or "Regent" of Earth and of Humanity. He is thought to be the physical incarnation of the Planetary Logos (the living being that ensouls this planet).[1][2][3][4]

Sanat Kumara is said to have dwelt in an etheric body for the past 18.5 million years on Shamballa. Floating above the Gobi Desert in the borderlands of Mongolia, Shamballa is described as a city invisible to the naked eye, as it exists only on the etheric plane. Known as the City of Enoch, Shamballa has been designated as the spiritual center of Earth "where the Will of God is known".[5][6][7][8]

Shamballa is a centre of energy, the major centre in the planet. It corresponds to the crown centre in the head in man, and from it and through it flows the energy we call Will. In fact, all the energies flow through Shamballa, but the specific energy we call the Shamballa Force, is the energy of Will or Purpose, which embodies the Purpose or Plan of God — God being that great Being who ensouls this planet, and who is reflected on the physical plane (because Shamballa is a physical center, in etheric physical matter) as Sanat Kumara, the Eternal Youth.[9]

In the Bible, Sanat Kumara is called as the ageless, "the Ancient of Days".[10] Sanat Kumara has also been described in ancient myths as a great being embodying the age, experience, and consciousness of a cosmic, interplanetary deity, someone whose very being far exceeds the hard-to-attain qualities of even the Masters of Wisdom (i.e., those who are said to comprise Earth's Fifth Kingdom, the kingdom above that of humanity, the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms).[7]

According to Theosophy, Sanat Kumara founded the Spiritual Hierarchy on Earth. Composed of Masters of Wisdom, the Hierarchy makes up an enlightened, planetary government that is presently headed by the Teacher of the World, Maitreya.[7][11]

Most notably, Sanat Kumara and all those who work directly with Him are said to be furthering "the great plan for the self-conscious enfoldment of all life" on Earth.[12] By taking physical form out of the Planetary Logos as Sanat Kumara, the great being that ensouls this planet catapulted early animal-man's evolutionary development forward. By refining and stimulating the fourfold lower aspects of human beings (i.e., their physical bodies, life force or prana, emotional bodies and nascent minds), Sanat Kumara enabled humans to become worthy receptacles for incoming souls, thereby empowering them to commence their spiritual journey. (This is what is depicted in the Genesis myth of the Bible — as well as in Michelangelo's frescoes in the Vatican — as regards to the "creation" of man and woman, as well as the descent into matter or the "fall" of Adam and Eve.)[13] Over time, such a journey offers the promise of both intellectual prowess or rationality, as well as self-realization.[14]

In Hinduism

In Sanskrit, "Sanat Kumara" is "Eternal Youth" (from Sanat "eternal", Ku "with difficulty" and Mara "mortal").[15] Sanat Kumara appears as a rishi in the Hindu religious text the Chandogya Upanishad. A shrine to Sanat Kumara which attracts and unites people of all religions and faiths is situated in the town of Kataragama, Sri Lanka.

In Buddhism

Shambhalla (Tib. bde 'byung) in Vajrayana Buddhism (the religion of Tibet) is a Sanskrit term meaning "place of peace/tranquility/happiness". Gautama Buddha is said by Vajrayana Buddhists to have taught the Kalachakra tantra on request of King Suchandra of Shambhalla; the teachings are also said to be preserved in Shamballa.

Each May during the full moon, Buddhists participate in an elaborate ritual in which Sanat Kumara is said to officiate (on the etheric level, from Shamballa). Buddhists call this "the Festival of Buddha" or Wesak, and consider it to be one of the holiest days of the year. In fact, many religious and non-religious people from around the world make the arduous journey to Western Tibet where the ceremony takes place, considering it a pilgrimage. The location of the festival is noteworthy not merely on account of its remoteness: While the festival marks Buddha's birth, it is situated in a place sacred to Hindus as well. The ceremony takes place at the foot of Mount Kailash, which rises 22,000 feet above sea level and is considered the abode of Lord Shiva. (Wesak is deemed to be one of the greatest of all esoteric ceremonies bestowed upon Humanity as it is a festival designated to promote "the energy of enlightenment":[16] In attendance are the Hierarchy and the head of the Masters of Wisdom, Maitreya.)[17]

During the ceremony, and at the apex of the full moon (when the Sun is aligned with the constellation of Taurus), it is believed that Gautama Buddha briefly descends into the valley, bestowing a blessing on those who attend, and all of mankind. During this time, the Lord of the Solar System, or the "Solar Logos" is believed to release cosmic energy to Earth in order to keep our planet's cosmic energy in balance.[17]

The Buddha, Whose Festival is held ever at the Full Moon of May... acts today as the agent of that great Life in Whom we live and move and have our being, Who is Himself the true Light of the World and the planetary Enlightener. I refer to the Ancient of Days (as He is called in the Old Testament ), to the God of Love, to Sanat Kumara, the Eternal Youth, the One Who holds all men in life and Who is carrying His whole creation along the path of evolution to its consummation – a consummation of which we have not as yet the faintest idea. Year after year, ever since the Buddha achieved His goal of illumination, an effort has been made to increase the flow of enlightenment into the world and to throw the light of wisdom, experience and understanding (as it is called) into the minds of men. At each Full Moon of May this has been the effort of the spiritual Forces which are working out the Will of God.[18]

In Theosophy

In addition, the Master Djwhal Khul, through his amanuensis, Alice A. Bailey, stated, "The Wesak Festival has been held down the centuries in the well-known valley in the Himalayas (if the faithful would only believe it) in order:

  1. To substantiate the fact of Christ's physical existence among us ever since His so-called departure.
  2. To prove (on the physical plane) the factual solidarity of the Eastern and Western approaches to God. Both the Christ and the Buddha are present.
  3. To form a rallying-point and a meeting-place for those who annually – in synthesis and symbolically – link up and represent the Father's House [Shamballa], the Kingdom of God [Heightened Consciousness] and Humanity.
  4. To demonstrate the nature of the work of Christ as the great and chosen Intermediary, standing as the Representative of the Spiritual Hierarchy and as the Leader of the New Group of World Servers. In His Person, He voices their demand for the recognition of the factual existence of Kingdom of God here and now."[19]

Sanat Kumara has been referred to by many names, including the "Youth of Endless Summers," "The One Initiator," as well as "The Great Sacrifice." While the Christ serves as the one who officiates for those rare individuals who achieve the first and second initiation, Sanat Kumara is said to act as the Hierophant at the subsequent initiations (with the third initiation considered as a turning point in human spiritual development, as it is then that the individual has acquired control over his/her mind).[20]

Helena Blavatsky asserted that Sanat Kumara belongs to a group of 30 beings called the "Lords of the Flame", who were originally from the planet Venus. (In the Judeo-Christian tradition, these same beings are presented as Lucifer and the angels who fell from the Godhead to Earth).[21][22][23] It is said that the governing council of the planet Venus – the Seven Holy Kumars – sent one of themselves, Sanat Kumara, to Earth to help Humanity grow spiritually mature.[24] (Venus, unlike the Earth, is identified as one of the spiritually advanced planets of this Solar System. The beings living on the etheric plane of Venus are said to be hundreds of millions of years ahead of Humanity in their psychological and spiritual development.) [25][26]

Blavatsky underscored the age-old necessity of keeping the greatest spiritual teachings clandestine on account of the selfishness and over self-involvement common to most men. The teachings themselves had to be protected from desecration, dogmatism, ritualism, blind faith, and distortion, "from the gradual transformation of things spiritual into anthropomorphic, concrete, and gross imagery",[27] which ordinarily ends by promoting intolerance and slowing Humanity's evolution. Moreover, she stressed that Theosophy was neither a religion nor a doctrine but a way of living and knowing (not merely through love of the truth but also a scientific verification of all which one observes). As such, Theosophical teachings are said to be ultimately accessible to all those searching for the truth, as "they are the birthright of every soul."[28]

In addition, love of all Humanity is a basic precept of Theosophy. When delineating the ultimate focus of Theosophy, Blavatsky stressed not merely ethics and intellectual rigor but practicality: "Its aims are several; but the most important of all are those which are likely to lead to the relief of human suffering under any or every form, moral as well as physical."[29]

In her writings about the Ageless Wisdom Teachings, the Theosophist Alice A. Bailey offers 24 books of esoteric and occult knowledge about the importance of elevating and unifying Humanity. In them, she describes the workings of invisible beings guiding the evolution of Earth itself, the Masters of Wisdom, with the hope that more and more people would arrive at:

an eventual synthetic grasp of the great plan, and a wise uniform realisation as to the work of that great group of liberated souls who, in utter self-abnegation, stand silently behind the world panorama. Through the power of their will, the strength of their meditations, the wisdom of their plans, and the scientific knowledge of energy which is theirs, they direct those force currents, and control those form-building agencies which produce all that is seen and unseen, movable and immovable in the sphere of creation within the three worlds. This coupled to their vast experience, is what fits them to be the agents for the distribution of the energy of the Planetary Logos.[30]

C. W. Leadbeater underscores that an increasing desire for freedom, paired with deepening love for "the Supreme", is ultimately what empowers one's self sufficiently to overcome the pull of matter. And as one's life ceases to be driven by lower desires (i.e., of the self-centered, vainglorious "ego"), one's life grows more and more impersonal. Upon offering one's life up in service for the good of the Whole, one begins to traverse the path of initiation and even to receive direct help, wherever possible, from the Masters, themselves. This is when one begins to gain an inkling of the Plan of the Logos. (Those who excel at this will radiate more and more light from within themselves.) That plan is designed not merely to restore and to uplift but to further the evolution of all that is on Earth.[31]

Ascended Masters teachings

In the glossary in the back of the book Alchemy, which Elizabeth Clare Prophet claims was dictated to her by Kuthumi, Satan and Sanat Kumara are clearly distinguished as two different and opposed beings — Satan working for evil and Sanat Kumara for good.[32]

The Bridge to Freedom, Church Universal and Triumphant and all other Ascended Master Teachings organizations believe that Sanat Kumara has a Divine Complement (Twin Flame or celestial wife), Lady Master Venus, the New Age "Goddess of Love".[33] According to the Ascended Master Teachings, Sanat Kumara and the Lady Master Venus have a daughter named the Lady Master Meta whom they brought with them from Venus. She is said to have incarnated as an Avatar in Atlantis (where she served as the high priestess at the Temple of Healing) and in Sassanian Persia, where she married a mortal and had three children. In the Ascended Master Teachings, Lady Master Meta is revered as the Goddess of Healing and is the patron deity of doctors and nurses.[34]

In addition, according to the Ascended Master Teachings, Omri-Tas, the Ruler of the Violet Planet, is said to be a Galactic level Ascended Master who, with his celestial mate, Irmo-Sat, supply Sanat Kumara with the violet flame. The violet flame is composed of a special type of etheric matter particles, called violetrons or neutron plasma particles, that are capable of cleansing negative karma. Omri-Tas rules a planet on the etheric plane called the Violet Planet. (The Violet Planet is one of many throughout the Cosmos that serve as reservoirs for the violet flame). Omri-Tas is the ruler of the Violet Planet that is closest to Earth and which is responsible for transmitting the violet flame from the Great Central Sun of the Cosmos via the Galactic Logos to planets in Ursa Major. Omri-Tas or one of his representatives periodically teleports from the Violet Planet to Shamballa with canisters of violet flame to replenish the violet flame in the large circular pool in the Temple of the Violet Flame located there. (In return for this violet flame, Sanat Kumara assigns to his care and tutelage worthy initiated Adepts/Chelas for etheric transport to their next assignments.)[35]

The Master Ashtar was first incorporated into the Ascended Master Teachings by Joshua David Stone. Stone claims the Master Jesus, under his galactic name Sananda (the name adopted after his resurrection), works with Commander Ashtar, flying with Pallas Athena in their own flying saucer within the Ashtar Galactic Command flying saucer fleet as its Commander-in-Chief.[36] According to Stone, another name used by Commander Ashtar to denote his flying saucer fleet is The Airborne Division of the Great White Brotherhood. Although the Ashtar Command is ultimately under the titular authority of Sanat Kumara, the Master Jesus, in consultation with Pallas Athena and Ashtar, makes all the day-to-day command decisions.[37]

According to some, The Ashtar Command is simply a modern version of the Sumerian/Babylonian goddess religion, with the deity Astarte/Ishtar/Isis and her entourage being responsible for protecting mankind from Satanic forces. On this planet, Satanic forces have been at war with those of the Hierarchy, and have sought to usurp the Earthly Regency of the local Ascended Masters. Forces emanating from Sanat Kumara play a role in protecting and engendering Divine Law, as the conflict between the Forces of Light and the Forces of Materiality has yet to be resolved.[38]

The Council of the Lord of the World

According to the Theosophical or Ageless Wisdom Teachings, Sanat Kumara regularly meets with Maitreya, the Maha Chohan, Djwal Khul, St. Germain, the Master Jesus and the other Masters of the Ancient Wisdom (of which it is said there are 24 principal council members) to discuss the Plan for Earth and to assess Earth's progress, on all of its realms. According to C.W. Leadbeater, it is also here that Sanat Kumara personally receives ambassadors from other solar systems (in order to help save life on the Earth).[39]

But another great "division" of those Forces (if I may symbolically use a military term) is being mobilised and can be brought into service at the Full Moon of May (Taurus) if the demand is strong enough, is mentally powerful and adequately focussed. These Forces work entirely upon the level of the mind and with the minds of men: it is their task to bring the battle between the Forces of Light and the Forces of Darkness to an end — not only physically, but through the inauguration of an era of right thinking. This will end the present cycle of emotional distress, the agony, of glamour and illusion, and of materialistic desires which today form the pattern of men's lives. This has to be done by means of the spiritual will, working as enlightenment upon the mental plane and demonstrating as wisdom, and as skill in action, motivated by loving understanding. These three aspects of light — mental enlightenment, the illumination which wisdom confers, and loving understanding — all find their perfect expression in the Lord of the World (Whom the Orthodox call God) and in His reflections, the Buddha and the Christ — the One who brought Illumination to the world and the Other Who demonstrated the actuality of the Love of God. These three great expressions of divinity (One so divine that we can only know Him through His representatives) can be called into a new and most potent activity through right invocation at the time of the Full Moon of May. Those who can carry out this great act of invocation are the spiritually minded people everywhere, the enlightened statesmen, the religious leaders, and the men and women of goodwill, if they can stand with massed intent, particularly throughout the entire month of April. Their assistance can be invoked by the dire need of men, women and children everywhere who voice no cry, for they know not where to turn, but whose appeal is heard and noted.

Their work, however, must be focussed through and implemented by the world intelligentsia, by leading "lovers of humanity," working in the various organizations and groups dedicated to human betterment, and by representative unselfish people. It is they who must receive the inflow of "lighted wisdom" and of loving understanding; today this can be made possible in a manner never known before. The success of the effort now being spiritually planned is dependent upon the ability of mankind to use the light they already have, in order to establish right relations in their families, in their communities, in their nation and in the world.[40]

According to the Theosophist Alice A. Bailey's writings, Sanat Kumara works with merely 6 Kumaras or Pratyeka Buddhas.[41] The writers of the Ascended Masters Teachings hold many different beliefs from those of traditional Theosophists, however, and contend that there are numerous aides to Sanat Kumara. They identify them according to role and function. One of these aides is referred to as The Watcher (also called the Silent Watcher or the Great Silent Watcher), whose function it is to monitor the Akashic records, which is an all-encompassing, cosmic library. The Great Silent Watcher records all information relevant to the life waves of Earth and forwards it on to the Custodian of the Hall of Records.[42] According to Elizabeth Clare Prophet, the Watcher is part of a special race of beings who are posted on planets throughout the Cosmos in order to fulfill this function.[43]

The Ascended Master Teachings expand upon the 3 Lords of Karma mentioned by Alice A. Bailey, identifying 7 Lords of Karma by name and by the energies or rays they direct: The Great Divine Director (1st ray), The Goddess of Liberty (2nd ray), Lady Master Nada (3rd ray), Cyclopea (4th ray), Pallas Athena (5th ray), Lady Master Portia (6th ray), and Kwan Yin (7th ray).[44]

Benjamin Creme's views

Benjamin Creme subscribes to the belief that the being that ensouls this planet, the higher aspect of Sanat Kumara, is what humans mean when they ordinarily speak of "God". That being said, however, Creme maintains that everything in the Universe itself is an aspect of God and that there are endless beings who are, in some sense, Gods — for these beings have attained self-mastery and self-realization, and are increasingly able to create by using thought. All that is seen and unseen, according to Creme, might be considered to be on an evolutionary journey which is spiritual in nature — permitting each individual being to approach closer and closer to the Godhead.[45]

God, in the esoteric meaning, is the sum total of all the Laws and all the energies governed by these Laws in the manifested and unmanifested universe. So God is impersonal. Nevertheless, that transcendent God is manifest in every aspect of creation, including ourselves. We are not separate from creation — from God. Every human being has the potential of the knowledge, the awareness, of all in creation that we can think of as meaning God. The Masters are God-realized, which is a very specific state, in that They have brought Their consciousness, in terms of the divine spark, the Absolute, the Self, into complete at-onement with Themselves as men on the physical plane — the personality and the divine aspect are totally integrated...

God is also the great Cosmic Being Who ensouls this planet. For all its solidity, its cities and aeroplanes and television studios and the like, this planet is really the body of expression of a Cosmic Being Who gives the planet its life, and Who has a plan of evolution for all the kingdoms in nature, including the human kingdom. What is really happening is that we, at our different levels, from the mineral kingdom up to the Kingdom of God itself, are carrying out an evolutionary process, which, in its summation, will make the planet a perfect expression of the thoughtform in the mind of the creating Logos...

Our Planetary Logos is only a part, a centre in the body of the Solar Logos, Who in turn is a center in the body of the galactic Logos. And on and on, galaxy after galaxy. There is no end to God; it is transcendent and also immanent in every part of creation. Every aspect of God, including ourselves, has the potential one day to know all and be all of that, and to work with the energies which create the universe.

God is everything that exists, and all space between that which exists, between you and me, and around us, around everything. All of that is God. God manifests through its creation, which is made of energies at particular vibrational rates. The form depends on the particular frequency of the nucleus and the electrons of those forms. Modern science has been able to break down cellular structures and show that at the centre of every atom is a nucleus with electrons around it, vibrating at a specific rate, and that every atom in the universe is made in the same way. There is nothing but energy in all of the manifested universe. The difference between that totally scientific view and that which an esotericist would hold is that the esotericist goes further and says, indeed, all is energy, but energy follows thought, is acted upon by thought. Thought is the agency by which creation takes place.[46]

Skeptical view

It is difficult to talk or write about God with any surety. That is why Buddha said that one cannot talk about God — not necessarily because God does not exist, but because human beings cannot cognize God. Human beings, in fact, ordinarily lack the language and the intellect and the experience to fathom, let alone approach, All-That-Is (except through their own subjective, anthropomorphic conceptions).[47]

Yet the irony of this is that before one comes to understand anything truly, one must also come face-to-face with one's own limitations, one's very smallness. In fact, it is this very incertitude that helps to prepare one's self to grow capable of relinquishing what is "known" (i.e., one's conditioning). Strangely enough, this kind of uncertainty may be acquired from working with a great teacher. Great teachers of the East have warned us about how clinging to any aspect of life, including our ideas of it, guarantees suffering — but such an approach ensures the eventual dissolution of what one considers one's very sense of self.[48]

At the same time, by merely considering questions about the nature of God, or what is truly of greatness, individuals have often been both humbled and ennobled, if not emboldened to make tremendous efforts that have left their very being transformed. That is why all kinds of teachers are needed: The most excellent of teachers help catapult their students' evolution forward. Such teachers do not merely offer a map of where one might go and how one might be. They are masters of themselves, as they model what it means to observe the world and one's life as it is actually unfolding, thereby helping their students to grow exquisitely attentive and alert, moment-to-moment. Such a course of study must be considered both deep and practical, for "attention puts an end to becoming...puts an end to [the mind's chaos, it's] action and reaction."[49] Moreover, both self-observation and meditation signify that one is breaking one's unhappy addiction to the self, and even to experience itself.[50]

For those who pursue the Ageless Wisdom Teachings, the aim is to become a scrupulous witness to one's very own life. While Sanat Kumara's spiritual prowess is considered too evolved to allow him to be anything but a misunderstood, obscure and remote, if not merely symbolic, figure vis-à-vis Humanity at this time, the Buddha and the Christ (and other, lesser known Masters) alert Humanity to what is possible, for they continue to alter the course of both individuals' lives and history, to this very day.[51]
