Life

Lee Myung-ae was born in Seoul, South Korea, on October 5, 1976. She studied Korean painting at university. After graduation, she worked as a game character designer, and developed an interest in picture books while taking time off after giving birth. She embarked on a career as a picture book author soon afterwards. She made her debut with her original picture book, Plastic Island, in 2014. She pursues a creative style somewhere in between painting and picture book illustration, and relies on podcasts for inspiration.[1] Currently, she maintains a small studio in Seoul, and regularly holds classes for children. Tomorrow Will Be a Sunny Day took 5 years to create, and Lee says it is the book she is attached to most, since it served as a catalyst for her artistic growth. Since then, her style has changed significantly. Her best-known works include Plastic Island, 10 Seconds, Tomorrow Will Be a Sunny Day, Vacation, and Flower.

Career

Lee was selected as Illustrator of the Year in Bologna in 2015 for her first original picture book, Plastic Island, which also won the 2015 Nami Concours Green Island Award and the 2015 BIB Golden Plaque Award for its creative approach. Tomorrow Will Be a Sunny Day, published in 2020, won the 2021 BIB Golden Apple Award.[2] The copyright for Plastic Island has been exported to Japan, Taiwan, France, China and Russia, broadening Lee’s readership abroad. She is an active member of the “Vacance Project,” in which well-known Korean picture book authors pursue independent publication of works that touch upon diverse topics and feature new expressive techniques under its aegis,[3] and which is galvanizing the culture of publishing in Korea. Lee Myung-ae has published works based on traditional fairy tales such as Dance and Flower as part of this project.[4]
